Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini an entrepreneur. She studied at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama and started her career in the British television show Just William (2010). Cinderella was her breakout part after her role as the character Lady Rose MacClare, in Downton Abbey's period drama (2012-2015). James then played Countess Natasha Rostova on the TV adaptation of War & Peace in 2016. James has appeared in many films including Baby Driver (2017) and period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society 2018, and The Dig 2021, as well as the musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Again 2018 and Yesterday (2019). Then, in 2022 her character as Pamela Anderson was recognized with the Golden Globe nomination and a Primetime Emmy Award.
